Zimbabwe offers lots of gorgeous nature. The bigger part of the country is located on a plateau of an altitude of more than 1000 meters. Rivers flow along the edges of the plateau– in the north and northwest the Zambezi, in the south and east the Limpopo and Sabi. The so called “Highveld” is especially interesting. River canyons cut deep into the plateau and mountains and green hills rise. Many of the rivers which empty in the Lake Kariba in the north or into the Zambezi have their origin here.

In the east at the border to Mozambique the Eastern Highlands rise up to an altitude of 2,500 meters. Nevertheless it is the savannas overgrown with grass and trees which dominate Zimbabwe’s landscape. Definitely worth a visit are the national parks. Some of them are said to be the most beautiful in southern Africa: Hwage in the west, Matapos in the south, Mana-Pools in the northeast and Nyanga in the east. Further one should stop at the Victoria Waterfalls.

Largest cities of the country are Harare, the capitol, Chitungwiza, Bulawayo, Mutare and Gweru.

A Zimbabwean traditional dish is Sadza (thick cornflower mush) with meat and/or sauce and a dip. Traditional corn beer, Hwahwa, is brewed for special occasions.

Some geography:
Zimbabwe stretches across an area of 391,000 square kilometers and has just about 12 million inhabitants. The citizens are a combination of Shona and Ndebele, which both belong to the Bantu tribes. Language of the country is English, but several tribal tongues are spoken as well. About half of the inhabitants are Christians; the smaller half lives according to traditional African religions. Citizen of Zimbabwe celebrate their national holiday on April 18th.

Black & white:
Momentarily Zimbabwe experiences an economical and political crisis. The majority of the people don’t have enough food. Time and again this triggers unrests and a rising number of crimes. Muggings are reported from the tourist centers in Harare, Victoria Waterfalls, Lake Kariba, the national monument Great Zimbabwe and the Eastern Highlands. Tourists traveling on their own should stay on main roads.
