According to the principle: The best things come in small packages – Luxembourg is an ideal destination for short trips. Nowhere else in Europe one can move faster from a large city into the mountains, into the woods or into the wine valleys.
The town Luxembourg has accumulated over 1000 years of history. One can experience it in the lanes of the old part of town or in the lower city parts. Right next door the regalia of the modern times show off: Palaces of glass, steel and concrete, palaces built from banks.
In contrast to that the woodlands in northern Luxembourg appear way more romantic - deep valleys and winding brooks. The castles of the Grand Duchy sit majestically up on top the hills.
It is also recommendable to ride towards the ‘Switzerland’ of Luxembourg at the border line to Germany. The bizarre rocks, deep valleys and grottoes are best discovered on foot. The main town Echternach is also worth visiting.
The southeast of Luxembourg is known for its wine growing. Especially grapes for outstanding dry white wines grow along the Moselle. One can take a nice break at the winegrower villages of Machtum, Wormelange or Stadtbredimus.
Luxembourg has to offer a few other culinary specialties besides the wine. For example Carré de porc fumé (smoked pork with thick beans or sauerkraut), Cochon de lait en gelée (young pig in aspic) or Jambon d’Ardennes (smoked Ardennes ham). Desserts are often prepared with liqueur, for example: Omelet soufflée au kirsch.
Some geography:
With its 2600 square kilometers the Grand Duchy is the smallest country in the European Union. Close to 450,000 inhabitants live here, 278,000 of which are Luxembourger. 38.1% are foreigners; this is the highest percentage within the EU. Portuguese, Frenchmen, Italian, Belgian and Germans live in Luxembourg.
Language of the country is Luxembourgian, the official language is French. German, too, belongs to the commercial languages of the country. The children already learn it in grammar school. 98% of the Luxembourger are Catholics. They celebrate their national holiday on June 23rd, the "official" birthday of the grand duke. |
