Greece’s different regions sound like chapters from a history book: Attica, Peloponnesus, Epirus, Thrakien ... Only years ago most of Greece’s visitors came to discover the traces of the classical antique. But the longings of the tourists have altered. Now they also enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere and the cordial hospitability of the Greeks. For suns lovers this is the perfect place to be.
The tours passing the antique evidences of Greek history are naturally just as interesting as always. Those many buildings have developed their charms embedded in fascinating country sides. There are convents on top of rugged rocks and green valleys hide nice temples.
Athens is a unique town living between past and modernity. It is stuffed with cultural monuments. But it is no ideal destination during the summer.
Greek food and culinary specialties have already spread far across the continent. The original naturally taste extra good, for example Dolmades (filled vine leaves), Moussaka, Souflaki, Taramosalata (pink roe paste with lemon juice), Kalamari (cuttlefish) or Tzatziki (yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cucumber and dill). Salads are usually prepared with Feta (sheep- and goat cheese) and olive oil. Water melon as well as figs and cactus fruits (late in the summer) are refreshing.
Greeks like their beverages sweet, whether coffee, Retsina (wine, made with the help of pines resin) or Ouzo (anise brandy).
Some geography:
The Hellenic Republic spreads across an area of 132,000 square kilometers. 10.5 million people live on the mainland as well as on the numerous islands. Language of the country is New Greek. A large majority belongs to the Greek-orthodox state church. March 25th is celebrated as the national holiday. At that day in1821 began the struggle for freedom against that Ottoman Empire. |
