Cyprus isn’t only attractive for its sand beaches, but also for its rugged coast, it’s green mountains and the many possibilities for interesting tours (there are plenty of off-road courses) across the country. If you are interested in history, Cyprus it the place to be. Paphos for example in the southwest is known for its so called king’s graves and the group of rock called Pétra tou Romeou. According to the legend Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, emerged from the water here. Marvelous bike rides especially touring the interior of the country lead past towns of antique ruins, castles of the Johanniter or right across orange fruit plantations.

If you want to try some tasty culinary go for Kebab (meat on a stick roasted over charcoal), Dolmas (vine leaves filled with minced meat and rice), Tava (stew of meat, herbs and onions) and Baklava (a sweet dessert). One should definitely sample a taste of wines from Cyprus. How about visiting the wine celebration at Lemesos, which is celebrated each year in September?

Some geography:
With its 9000 qkm, Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Close to 1 million people live here; two thirds of them are Greek and live in the south. In the north live the Turkish Cypriotes. Nikosia, the capital, is divided into a secured buffer area by the UN-troops.
Just as the land is divided the religion is divided, too: Mainly Greek-orthodox people live in the south; in the north almost all of them are Muslims.
Cyprus is independent since 1960. The government only rules in the south of the island (see black & white). English is lingua franca.
