The West Allgaeu Cheese Road is embedded in the charming Allgaeu foothills of the Alps and leads from Bad Wurzach in the north to Schneidegg in the southern part of the west Allgaeu cheese country. For centuries, untreated milk from happy cows was produced to cheese here. However, the Emmentaler cheese was introduced to this region by the Swiss in 1821. And it has stayed here ever since.
The handiwork of making cheese can be experienced at numerous dairies along the way. Schneidegg, a resort and vacation town of about 4000 inhabitants is the starting point for this cheese tour which visits numerous alpine dairies in the west Allgaeu. Anyone who starts this round trip in the morning and who is already craving for cheese finds a great place to stop at Baldaufs Cheese and Wine Cellar. This place opens in the early hours of the day and is located about four kilometers beyond Schneidegg in Lindenberg. Here the tradition of producing cheese goes back to 1862.
If you are interested how the golden loafs are made you should watch the masters perform their skills at the cheese show performed for the guests. And if you are on your way between August 26th and 27th you might want to take part in the International Cheese and Wine Festival. If this is more cheese than you can take at the moment, you can also concentrate on motorcycling again and enjoy the beautiful Allgaeu landscape in the foothills of the Alps.
The tour leaves the town of Lindenberg with its 11,000 inhabitants behind and leads via Gossholz, Argenbuehl-Eglofs and Christazhofen to Wangen. Here another dairy presents a course in the menu for lovers of the dairy product. The alpine dairy Zurwies has specialized on organic cheese and surely offers delicious bites for hungry bikers. Here too, people interested in the production of cheese may take a look how an expert makes organic cheese. From here the tour continues on via Amtzell and Kisslegg, Bad Wurzach and Leutkirch to the village of Isny. Here gourmets will find a wide variety of cheese.
The cheese church Isny is not only the smallest diary in Baden-Württemberg; it is also one of the best. It has repeatedly been awarded for its products. So: Get off your bike and into the kitchen. It makes sense to take some time to relax in Isny. The beautiful old quarters of town also invite to take a break. From Isny to the final destination of the short, but tasty tour it is only another 30 kilometers away. The tour runs via the herb village of Stiefenhofen with its alpine dairy Rutzhofen back to Schneidegg.
By the way: If the weather allows it, you should pack your swim suit in your bag. The round course through the Allgaeu passes by several lakes which await their guests (moor resort Burg in Argenbuehl-Eglofs, beach resort Obersee in Kisslegg, forest resort Isny). One does not necessarily have to start off in Schneidegg. It is surely also possible to start the tour from any other town along the way. |
