Algeria is a land of contrasts. The coastal stripe is fertile, 90 % of the population live here. The Atlas Mountains run parallel to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It summits extend onto a height of 2000 m. South of it the highland of the Schotts with its salt lakes are located.

The Sahara takes up Algeria’s largest part. Here live nomads with their goats- and camel herds. In the south a breath-taking mountain range raises: The up to 3000 m high Hoggar-massif and the Tassili N’Ajjer. In the north Algeria is influenced by European culinary specialties: Especially from the close neighborhood of Italy and France.

The Algerian touch consists of the partly hot spices. Typical Algerian dishes are Merguez (hot sausages from lamb meat), Brochettes (baguette with filling) or Shakshuba (vegetable stew with eggs). In the south anything offered on the markets can also be found on the tables. Cous-Cous is famous. Domestic wines can be very much recommended.

In general one should respect Islam’s disapproval of alcohol. Whoever is traveling across country will mostly experience hospitable folks. Especially in the south one meets open hearts and doors. Take care to put away your camera near military establishments and soldiers!

Some geography:
Algeria is 7-times as big as Germany. 31 million Arab and Berber live here. The country won independence in 1962. The languages of the country are Arabian and Maziria; French is lingua franca. State religion is the Islam. Algeria celebrates its national holiday on November 1st. On that day in 1954 the Algeria began its freedom combat against France.
